How to Search the Hamilton County Jail Roster
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office provides a free official inmate-search database. Users can search the current jail population through the Justice Center Services section.
The most reliable method is to enter the person’s complete legal name. When no result appears, try:
- Searching with only the surname
- Removing the middle name
- Checking an alternative spelling
- Confirming the date of birth
- Waiting for the booking process to finish
The official roster is intended to help users locate a particular inmate and review basic custody information.
Information Shown in an Inmate Record
An individual inmate profile may display:
- Full legal name
- Inmate identification number
- Booking number
- Date of birth
- Sex and race
- Booking date
- Projected release date, when available
- Common Pleas Court case number
- Municipal Court case number
- Other jurisdiction case numbers
- Court dates
- Ohio Revised Code charge numbers

The search may show several charges under one inmate. Each charge can have a different bond, court date or disposition.
Why Someone May Not Appear on the Roster
A person may not immediately appear in the inmate search because:
- Booking is still underway
- Identity verification has not been completed
- The arrest resulted in a citation
- The person posted bond quickly
- The name was entered differently
- The individual was transferred elsewhere
- State or federal authorities have custody
- The person is in a juvenile facility
- The individual has already been released
Booking generally includes identification, fingerprinting, photographing, medical screening, warrant checks and entry of charge information.
For a recent arrest, allow time for processing before concluding that the person is not in custody.
A Jail Entry Is Not Proof of Guilt
A person appearing on the Hamilton County jail roster has not necessarily been convicted.
The Justice Center houses many defendants who are awaiting an initial hearing, trial, sentencing or transfer. Charges shown in the roster are accusations recorded during the legal process.
Prosecutors may later amend, reduce or dismiss charges. A defendant may also be found not guilty.
The roster should therefore be used to confirm custody and identify court cases rather than determine guilt.
Understanding Bond Information
The inmate-search record may list a separate bond for each charge.
A zero-dollar or blank bond entry does not necessarily mean the inmate can be released without payment. It may mean:

Electronic-Monitoring Bonds
When a judge orders electronic monitoring as a release condition, paying the bond alone may not complete the release process.
The monitoring department may require:

- The property owner’s or tenant’s name
- A contact telephone number
- An alternative contact
- Verification that the residence is suitable

Bond Scam Warning
Hamilton County officials warn that bonds are not collected by telephone.
A caller claiming to be from the Sheriff’s Office may be attempting fraud when the caller:
- Demands immediate telephone payment
- Threatens arrest unless money is transferred
- Requests Cash App, Zelle or Bitcoin
- Asks for gift cards
- Directs someone to meet outside the Justice Center
- Requests banking passwords or verification codes
All legitimate Hamilton County bond payments must be made in person at the Justice Center.
On-Site Video Visitation
Hamilton County uses HomeWAV for inmate video visits, voice calls and electronic messaging.
On-site Justice Center visits are generally available:
- Monday through Friday
- 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
There are no on-site visits on holidays.
Visitors must create and obtain approval for a HomeWAV account before using the service. The Sheriff’s Office may refuse or terminate a visit for security or rule violations.
Remote Video-Visitation Hours
Remote visits for Justice Center inmates are generally available:
- Monday through Saturday
- 9:00 a.m. to 8:40 p.m.
- Sunday
- 11:00 a.m. to 8:40 p.m.
The available time shown in HomeWAV may depend on the inmate’s housing assignment, court appearances, medical appointments, lockdowns and disciplinary status.
Visitation Rules
Visitors must follow the Justice Center’s identification, dress and behaviour requirements.
Published conditions include:
- The registered visitor must be present
- A valid government-issued ID is required
- The HomeWAV account must include the visitor’s photograph
- Social-media filters cannot be used on the profile image
- Minors must be accompanied by an adult
- No more than four visitors may participate at one time
- Visitors cannot have active warrants
- Visitors cannot have an active temporary protection order
- Appropriate clothing must be worn throughout the visit
- Nudity, sexual conduct and weapons are prohibited
A violation may result in immediate termination and possible suspension of future visiting privileges. Social calls and video visits may be monitored and recorded.
Inmate Telephone Calls and Messages
HomeWAV also provides voice calls and secure electronic messaging.
Friends and family can create an account through the provider and add communication funds. Once an approved user is online, the incarcerated person may receive a notification and initiate a voice or video call.
Inmates generally cannot receive ordinary direct incoming calls through the jail switchboard.

How to Send Personal Mail
The Hamilton County Justice Center no longer accepts ordinary personal mail at the Sycamore Street jail address. Mail sent directly to the facility may be returned.
Personal correspondence must be sent through the TextBehind processing service using this format:

The facility name should not be abbreviated.
The envelope must also show:

The personal-mail processor does not accept:
- Legal mail
- Money orders
- Cash
- Personal checks
- Credit or debit cards
- Gift cards
- Driver’s licences

- Books
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- Catalogues
- Other material that cannot be scanned
Personal letters are scanned and delivered electronically to the inmate through the jail’s communication system.
Sending Books
Books must be purchased from and sent directly by a recognised book vendor.
The jail’s current rules include:
- No more than three books per month
- No used books
- No wire-bound books
- No books containing metal
- No book thicker than three inches
- No material displaying drugs, alcohol, nudity, weapons or prohibited hand gestures
- No coloured pencils, markers or notebooks
- No oversized poster-board material

Depositing Money for an Inmate
Every person booked into the Justice Center receives an inmate account. Funds in this account may be used to purchase approved commissary items.
Deposits can be made:
- At kiosks in the North and South Justice Center lobbies
- Through the jail’s approved online commissary-deposit service
- By mailing an eligible money order
The inmate’s name and JMS number must be provided. Processing fees apply to both cash and card transactions.
Money orders must include the inmate’s name and JMS number both on the money order and the envelope. They should not be sent to the TextBehind personal-mail address.
Commissary Rules
Inmates may order approved snacks, hygiene products, writing supplies and other authorised items through commissary.
Important rules include:
- The weekly spending limit is $75
- The inmate may submit only one order slip
- Funds must already be available when orders are collected
- The inmate’s ID number and housing location must appear on the order
- Hygiene products are filled first when the order exceeds the available balance
- Out-of-stock products are not substituted
- Undelivered purchases are refunded to the inmate’s account
Delivery days vary according to the inmate’s housing floor or unit.
Inmate Property
The inmate property department is located in the South Building of the Justice Center.
Its published hours are:
- Monday through Friday
- 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Closed on holidays

An inmate must complete a property-release form before clothing, wallets, keys or other stored items can be collected. The authorised recipient must present valid identification.
Items That May Be Delivered
The property window accepts limited medical and court-related items, including:
- Prescription glasses
- Sealed contact lenses
- Dentures
- Approved court clothing
Contact-lens solution is not accepted.
Court clothing must generally be delivered between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on the day before court. For a Monday court date, clothing should be delivered on the preceding Friday.
Acceptable court attire may include a suit, polo shirt, button-up shirt or khaki trousers. Belts, ties, suspenders and shoes are not accepted. Clothing treated with perfume, cologne or scented oil may also be rejected.
Checking Hamilton County Court Records
The inmate roster provides current custody and booking information. Court records may provide:
- Formal charges
- Hearing dates
- Court orders
- Bond decisions
- Attorney information
- Pleas and judgments
- Case dispositions
The Hamilton County Clerk of Courts maintains searchable Municipal and Common Pleas Court records. A case may not appear immediately after an arrest because reports and charging documents must first be processed.
Release Processing
A projected release date shown in the roster is not always final. It may change because of:
- A new court order
- Additional charges
- An outside warrant
- A probation or parole hold
- Disciplinary action
- Transfer to another institution
- Electronic-monitoring requirements
After release, qualifying money remaining in the inmate account is placed on a Release Pay debit card. This generally does not apply to inmates transferred directly to another correctional institution.
Families should wait for confirmation from the inmate or Justice Center before travelling to collect someone.

Most importantly, an inmate-roster entry records detention and allegations at a particular time. It does not prove that the person committed the listed offence.
